Every time a 360 centre has been assessed & rated over the past 17 years, we have exceeded the National Quality Standard.

As a parent, you want more than just a safe space. You want a centre where your child feels seen, supported, and encouraged to thrive.

But how do you know what to look for, or what truly makes one centre different from another?

We created this guide to help you understand the national standards, what it means to exceed them, and why it matters for your child’s development and wellbeing.

Choosing Excellence Makes a Difference for Your Child

Choosing childcare can feel overwhelming. How do you know which centre will truly support your child’s growth and wellbeing?

The National Quality Standard (NQS) is Australia’s trusted benchmark for quality in early education and care.
Every centre is assessed against 7 Quality Areas:

  1. Educational program and practice

  2. Children’s health and safety (Read More About Our Commitment to Child Safety)

  3. Physical environment

  4. Staffing arrangements

  5. Relationships with children

  6. Collaborative partnerships with families and communities

  7. Governance and leadership

Based on performance in these areas, each centre is assigned one of the following ratings: Significant Improvement Required, Working Towards NQS, Meeting NQS, Exceeding NQS, Excellent and Not Yet Assessed.

What Are the NQS Ratings & What Do They Mean for Your Child?

Based on a centre’s performance in the 7 Quality Areas, the National Quality Standard assigns one of the following ratings:

Services that achieve Exceeding in all 7 Quality Areas may choose to apply for the “Excellent” rating — a recognition granted by ACECQA for leadership, innovation, and community impact. As an Exceeding provider, 360 intends to apply for this rating in the near future.

What Does It Really Mean to Exceed the NQS?

When a centre is rated Exceeding, it goes beyond the basics, offering richer learning, deeper relationships, and a strong culture of continuous improvement.

  • It means educators don’t just follow routines, they reflect, adapt, and grow.
  • Families aren’t just informed, they’re genuinely included.
  • Children aren’t just safe, they’re deeply known, supported, and inspired.

To be rated Exceeding, a centre must show that high-quality practice is:

  • Embedded in everyday routines

  • Informed by ongoing reflection and evidence

  • Shaped by meaningful partnerships with families

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does it mean when a childcare centre is rated “Exceeding” the National Quality Standard?

A centre rated Exceeding the National Quality Standard (NQS) has been assessed as going above and beyond what is expected at the Meeting NQS level. This means the service demonstrates high-quality practices across all relevant standards, evaluated through three key themes:

  • Embedded practice: Quality is consistently integrated into everyday operations.
  • Informed by critical reflection: Educators regularly reflect on and improve their practices.
  • Shaped by meaningful engagement with families and the community: Families are active partners in the learning journey.

At 360 Early Education, every centre that has been assessed over the past 16 years has achieved this rating — a reflection of our deep commitment to excellence, innovation, and genuine relationships with children and families.

When choosing a centre, look beyond the basics. A high-quality early learning centre should offer:

  • Consistent, nurturing relationships between educators and children
  • A play-based, evidence-informed curriculum that supports emotional, social, and cognitive development
  • Strong partnerships with families, where your voice is valued
  • A safe, stimulating environment that encourages exploration and creativity
  • Experienced, qualified educators who reflect, adapt, and grow with your child

Centres rated Exceeding the National Quality Standard provide a higher level of care and education that directly supports your child’s learning, development, and wellbeing. According to ACECQA, these centres demonstrate practices that are:

  • Embedded in everyday routines
  • Informed by critical reflection
  • Shaped by meaningful engagement with families and community

This means your child benefits from a curriculum that is child-centred, culturally responsive, and tailored to their strengths, interests, and needs. Educators in Exceeding-rated centres create stimulating environments that promote emotional security, curiosity, and resilience — all of which are linked to long-term developmental outcomes

At 360 Early Education, families are not just participants — they’re partners. One of the key indicators of an Exceeding rating is the strength of collaboration between educators and families. We actively involve parents in their child’s learning journey through open communication, shared goal-setting, and regular opportunities to engage with our programs and community.

We believe that children thrive when their families are deeply connected to their learning environment. That’s why we prioritise genuine relationships, cultural inclusivity, and transparency — ensuring every family feels seen, heard, and valued.
